Dr. Maria Artunduaga is the CEO of Respira Labs, a startup that detects early signs of deterioration in COPD using wearables and machine learning. She has 15 years of experience leading NIH and the Gates Foundation-funded projects, published in the NEJM and Nature, and received more than 20 awards. She trained in genetics at Harvard and plastic surgery at the University of Chicago before switching careers after her grandmother passed from COPD complications. She completed an MPH from UWashington and an MTM from UCSF/UC Berkeley. Maria’s broad range of skills position her to work on the intersection of medicine, tech, policy, and education. She is a frequent speaker on issues involving entrepreneurship, STEM gender-racial diversity and global economic development.

Dr. Karen Sachs received her PhD from MIT where she pioneered the use of single-cell data for causal modeling of molecular networks. She completed her postdoc at Stanford where she developed machine learning tools for single-cell data analysis. Dr. Sachs is the founder of Next Generation Analytics, a computational biology consulting firm with projects in academia and industry. She is the Chief Data Scientist at Answer ALS, where she integrates -omics data to elucidate the pathophysiology of ALS. She has been using and developing tools in machine learning and data science for over 10 years.

Jamie Whitacre works on data challenges in biological research and is intrigued by the evolution of technology. After serving as the Technical Project Manager for Project Jupyterat the UC Berkeley Institute for Data Science, Jamie collaborated with Pearson Publishing to produce online courses on using the JupyterNotebook.
Jamie has more than 10 years of experience in scientific computing systems, informatics, and data analysis. She previously worked at the Smithsonian’s National Museum of Natural History developing data pipelines for the Global Genome Initiative.

The Palo Alto chapter of the Association for Women in Science (Palo Alto AWIS) was founded in 1983 by Rivka Sherman-Gold to:
- provide networking opportunities for women in science at all levels
