This is a great opportunity to meet members of all the Northern California Chapters of AWIS (Palo Alto, San Francisco, East Bay, and Sacramento Valley) in a casual setting.
Families are welcome! We will be grilling delicious tri-tip and will provide drinks and games. Please bring a side dish or dessert to share with 6-8. Hope to see you there! |
The Beresford Park has paths for walking, grassy and picnic areas, several playgrounds, skate park, bocce, as well as tennis and basketball courts nearby. We will be located in picnic Area #3. Public Policy and Government Careers for Scientists

A career in policy-making and public service offers the opportunity to be the conduit between the worlds of science and policy. To learn more about what a career in public policy and government involves, join us for an interactive session with Erika Bustamante, Director of State Government Relations at Stanford University, and Rebecca Newhouse, Environmental Scientist at the US EPA.
Erika Bustamante manages the activities and relationships with state governmental bodies related to regulatory and legislative issues impacting Stanford’s mission. Previous to joining Stanford, Bustamante worked as the Legislative Director for Assembly Member Luis Alejo. She is also a former California Science and Technology Policy Fellow. Bustamante holds a BS in Molecular, Cell and Developmental Biology from UCLA and a Ph.D. in Developmental Biology form Stanford University.

Rebecca Newhouse is an Environmental Scientist in the Air Division at US EPA, Region 9. Before joining the EPA, Rebecca worked as a committee consultant for the California State Senate Environmental Quality Committee. Prior to working for the State Legislature, she was a 2011/12 Science and Technology Policy Fellow with the California Council on Science and Technology. Rebecca has a PhD from UC Santa Cruz in chemistry and a bachelor’s degree in biochemistry from Western Washington University in Bellingham.

Every team brings its own leadership challenges. Learn from Conductor Nathaniel Berman, Faculty Member at University of California Santa Cruz (UCSC), how an orchestra ensures that everybody listens and contributes as a team to create a harmonious experience. Join us for an interactive session to explore the interplay of listening and reacting, and to understand how non-verbal cues can serve as a powerful leadership tool.
Nathaniel Berman maintains an active presence as a performer and music educator in the San Francisco Bay Area. Equally dedicated to new music and interdisciplinary collaboration, Mr. Berman is a Faculty Member of the music department at UCSC; Conductor of the Wind Ensemble and Concert Choir; Music Director of the Santa Cruz County Youth Symphony; Artistic Director and Conductor of the San Francisco-based new-music ensemble Wild Rumpus. Mr. Berman received his Master's degree in conducting from UCSC, where he studied with Nicole Paiement. His first instrument was trumpet, and he grew up playing duets with his dad, a jazz pianist and singer. |

To help you on this journey AWIS Palo Alto has invited Dr. David Hansen, Scientist at Genentech. Join us for a discussion on how your values, interests, and skills fit into career paths in the biotech industry.
David Hansen graduated in 2006 from the Stanford Cancer Biology program, where he studied cell division in Peter Jackson's lab. He then did postdoctoral work studying neural stem cells and human brain development with Arnold Kriegstein and Arturo Alvarez-Buylla at UCSF. In 2011, David joined Genentech as a scientist and is now working to develop novel therapeutic drugs for Alzheimer's and other neurodegenerative diseases. |
